Naturally, that gets us thinking about film. Obviously.
As film prices creep past what my 2020 stimulus check used to be worth, a dangerous thought starts to form:What’s with this digital thing?
But this?This isn’t the digital camera you’re expecting.
And—dare I say it—could it actually be… fun?
Let’s find out.
📷 A Film Photographer Accidentally Tries Digital
If you’ve spent any amount of time on the Bad Flashes channel, you know I shoot that saucy, subtle, overpriced celluloid. Film photography is the home base. Tri-X. Kentmere pushed two stops. T-Max if you’re feeling dangerous.
Digital?Mega pickles.Hard pass.
But every once in a while, a camera makes me stop mid-roll, drop my shutter curtain on the floor, and do a double take.
The Pentax K3 III Monochrome is one of those cameras.
And no — this isn’t some Unknown rangefinder situation where vibes do all the heavy lifting. This thing has opinions.
🧪 What Is the Pentax K3 III Monochrome?
Let’s ignore the Monochrome badge for one second and talk guts.
At its core, this is Pentax’s flagship APS-C DSLR:
25 megapixels (or as I like to call them… mega pickles)
Weather-sealed
Button-heavy in a way that would make a Tesla interior blush
The PASM dial alone has more letters on it than my full legal name.
But here’s the thing — this camera is one of one.
In a world of endless mirrorless clones and AI-enhanced everything, the Pentax K3 III Monochrome only shoots black and white. No color sensor. No Bayer filter. No safety net.
Just intention.
🎞️ Why Monochrome Matters (Especially to Film Shooters)
Black and white photography has always been an intentional medium.
When you load Tri-X into a Leica or push Kentmere two stops because you forgot a tripod (again), you’re making a choice before you even press the shutter.
Most digital cameras treat black and white like a checkbox.This camera treats it like a philosophy.
There are currently very few monochrome cameras on the market:
Pentax K3 III Monochrome
Leica M11 Monochrom
Leica Q2 Monochrom
And let’s be honest — the Leica options are priced about as aggressively as organic eggs in 2025.
The Pentax sits in a very strange, very interesting middle ground — especially for film photographers flirting with digital or searching for an Unknown rangefinder-style mindset without selling a kidney.
🖤 Image Quality: Shockingly Close to Film
Here’s the part that surprised me.
These images?They’re crispy.
The tonal roll-off, the highlight handling, the contrast — in certain lighting conditions, this thing genuinely looks like black and white film. Not identical, but close enough to make you nervous your Leica might hear about it.
Does it have film character?Not exactly.
But if you’re after:
Clean black and white files
Massive dynamic range
Shockingly flexible JPEGs
This camera absolutely delivers.

🔊 DSLR in 2025… and It Feels Good?
This is one of the last DSLRs still being produced.
That means:
A mirror
A shutter sound that actually exists
Physical feedback when you take a photo
The mirror slap is quiet, confident, and deeply satisfying — something you don’t realize you miss until it’s gone.
When’s the last time you used a DSLR and smiled because of the sound?
Exactly.
🎥 4K Monochrome Video (Why Not?)
Is it necessary?Absolutely not.
Do I love it anyway?Yes.
The Pentax K3 III Monochrome can shoot 4K monochrome video, which is objectively ridiculous and completely on brand for this camera. It’s one of those features that doesn’t make sense — but makes me smile.
And smiling while shooting matters.
🔍 Lenses, Softness, and Film-Like Weirdness
I’ve been using Pentax’s 21mm, 31mm, and 40mm lenses — some full-frame, some pancake-sized enough to make you question physics.
They’re sharp…Except when they’re not.
Wide open, they live in that “did I miss focus or is this just vibey?” zone that film shooters know well. And honestly? I’m here for it.
The images of the dry cleaners in particular felt the most film-like — beautiful roll-off, natural contrast, zero digital harshness.
🤔 So… What Do I Really Think?
Here’s the conflict.
On one hand:Digital.Ew.
On the other:I’m having fun.
The Pentax K3 III Monochrome feels special — but I can’t help thinking the sensor might be in the wrong body.
Personally?I want this sensor in something lighter. Breezier. More Unknown rangefinder energy.
Think:
Ricoh GR
Fuji X-Pro
Nikon Zf
A sleek, rangefinder-style monochrome camera that strips things down to the essentials.
That said — what Pentax has done here is genuinely unique. And in a sea of safe cameras, I respect the hell out of that.
